Home Laos Cycling Tours Laos Family Bike Tour
Explore Laos with the whole family on an active tour exploring Luang Prabang by bike and boat down the Mekong River. From ancient temples to jungle trekking and an elephant sanctuary, this is an unforgettable experience that will deepen your understanding of this beautiful country.
Meet your guide at 14:00 at the hotel reception where a trip briefing will be held. Then, begin the afternoon tour by cycling around the old quarter of Luang Prabang.
Experience the rich traditions and culture of Laos. You will visit museums, temples, and Mount Phousi, fill your day with breathtaking sights and engaging glimpses into the history of this UNESCO-listed city. Afterward, enjoy the creative local cuisine in Luang Prabang.
After having breakfast at your hotel, you will set off on a scenic ride along the Mekong River to the beautiful Kuang Si waterfall. Enjoy the medium-grade ride which lasts 2-3 hours with some hills, making several stops to explore the local villages along the way. When you arrive, marvel at Kuang Si Waterfall which spans a large area through some of the lushest jungle around Luang Prabang.
Explore the easy walking trails which wind past numerous pools and water cascades where you can relax and swim. Enjoy a provided lunch at the waterfall as you soak up the scenic views and tranquil atmosphere. Then, make use of the small private changing rooms near the waterfall, which allow you to change into your swimming suit. You can also see up-close Asiatic bears at the Bear Rescue Centre along the jungle walk to the waterfall.
After plenty of recreation time at the waterfall, hop back onto the bikes for a fun downhill ride to the Mekong River. Then, board a long-tail boat for a 2-hour scenic cruise up the Mekong River back to Luang Prabang. Finally, ride the short distance back to the bike shop to wrap up a great day.
Today, we cycle along backroads to see Wat Pa Phon Phao, a golden temple with a great view of Luang Prabang. Afterward, we’ll continue along the Nam Khan River to the grave of Henri Mouhot. We’ll finish the 15 km ride in the Nam Khan valley amid a spectacular vista of mountains, rivers, and small villages and then break for lunch at a local family house with a mountain-view terrace or at Tad Sae Waterfall (depending on season and timing).
A short boat ride will bring us to Tad Sae Waterfall for a refreshing swim under the jungle canopy. That’ll be followed by another short ride to our kayaking center, where we’ll conduct a brief kayaking instruction and safety review. Then we begin our adventure down the river. During the rainy season, the river is high and moves at a nice pace through lush jungle countryside. It’s 20 km of easy to medium kayaking and normally takes 3–4 hours with breaks included. We’ll wrap up just under the Luang Prabang city bridge, where we meet our truck for a 10-minute return ride to the city center.
This morning, we’ll ride from the city to our first stop at Wat Pa Phon Phao, a forest temple with a great view of Luang Prabang. Follow the paved road further through teakwood forests and rice fields along the Nam Khan River to visit the resting spot of Henri Mouhot.
The highlight is an elephant experience in the stunning landscape with a background of jungle-covered mountains, and you’ll enjoy lunch in a beautiful setting. Afterward, take a boat ride to visit the Tad Sae Waterfall for a refreshing swim (August through January) or for a short jungle walk with a visit to a baby elephant in the jungle (February through July). After a short return boat ride, continue biking through beautiful scenery on a new path back to Luang Prabang.
There are no activities planned for today! Our tour concludes with a transfer to the Luang Prabang airport. Take the day to reflect upon the rewarding trip and say goodbye to your guide and driver.
